As I began uncovering the systemic inequities faced by my community even now, I could not help but wonder about the insidious roots of the American economy. Forged on the backs of millions of slaves, our capitalist history is riddled with crime, policy and institutional racism that has strategically oppressed black families for centuries.
The timeline below traces the unique financial journey of American slaves who legally went from property to people after the end of the Civil War in 1865.
